Meet the pets of JJN Multimedia

It’s hard to believe it’s already February! Last month, you got reacquainted with our team. This month, we’re introducing you to our team’s pets.

Below, we’re sharing stories about our pets, their backgrounds, quirks, and the impact they have on our lives.

Otis

Otis (Hannah)

Nicknames: Otie, Oat, Otis Ray Sugarman, Otie Ray

It was love at first sight for web developer and graphic designer Hannah Craig when she saw Otis on Facebook. Otis, whom she adopted in October 2020, is a one-and-a-half-year-old dachshund/jack russell terrier mix who loves playing with bouncy balls and his Kong toy. He’s also a huge fan of cheese (just don’t say the word around him – he gets excited). Otis’ easy going nature is one of Hannah’s favorite traits about him.

“My favorite thing about Otis is how affectionate and cuddly he is,” Hannah says. “He gives me no personal space, and I wouldn’t have it any other way. I love how much he loves me. I also love how playful he is with other dogs; he is very friendly and agreeable!”

Leica

Leica (Lexi)

Nicknames: Rodent, sweet girl

Leica is a seven-year-old Maine Coon tabby mix who belongs to Lexi, our director of communications and operations. A family friend had taken in Leica’s mom and siblings and kept them in her garage until they were all vetted. Lexi’s mom saw the friend’s post on Facebook, shared it with her, and the rest was history. Leica was six months old when Leica and her husband Marcus adopted her, and she’s gradually warmed up over time to them (plus the occasional friend). Her favorite activity is chasing rubber bands down the hallway.

“Leica isn’t social, so it’s super special when she goes out of her way to sit with/on/beside us,” Lexi says. “I love her little squeaks when she stretches and how she covers her eyes when she’s trying to sleep in a sunny spot. She’s such good company.”

Timber
Jiji (left) & Moon (right)

Timber, Jiji, and Moon (Megan)

Nicknames: Timberrrrrr, Chunky Boi (Timber) Ji (Jiji) Moon moon, moonie (Moon)

Digital designer Megan Taylor has three pets: two cats and a frog. Timber, her three-year-old frog, was adopted from a pet store. He is an Australian White’s Tree Frog — hence the origin of his tree-like name: “Timber!” His favorite activities consist of snoozing in his Mario warp pipe, chilling in his little pond, and hopping around on his bamboo swinging bridge. His treat of choice is crickets.

I love having a small little buddy that I can learn from and take care of,” Megan says. “I’ve loved frogs my whole life so it has been so neat to have one as a pet. The most interesting thing about him is that he changes colors from light teal/blue to dark brown based on his mood and the seasons!”

Jiji and Moon have lived with Megan since birth. Their mom, a stray, had her kittens in Megan’s family’s garage, and Megan’s family has taken care of them since (mom included). Jiji’s name was inspired by one of Megan’s favorite Studio Ghibli films, “Kiki’s Delivery Service.” Moon was named partially for her gray coloring and as a nod to an old meme of a wolf named “moon moon,” which has become her nickname. Jiji’s favorite toys are shoe strings and pencils, and Moon loves watching TV.

“I love that they each have their own very unique personality,” Megan says. “When I bend down to pet Jiji, she immediately stands up to grab my hand. When I try to pet Moon, her first reaction is to fall to the ground so I can give her belly rubs. They’re both wonderful furry friends that I’m very thankful for.”

Noble (top) & Church (bottom)

Church and Noble (Page)

Nicknames: Nobu Namu, Nabuu, Heathen (Noble) Baby Boy, Choich (Church)

Church and Noble are frequent participants in our Zoom meetings. Web Development Director Page adopted Noble in 2011 as a kitten from a friend in Kermit, West Virginia, when she was home from college and living with her dad. She’s lived a life of luxury ever since. In 2012, Page and her husband Steve found Church outside a dumpster when they were living in Beaufort, South Carolina. Church wasn’t in the best shape when they discovered him hiding in bushes, but with lots of love and a vet visit, he permanently became part of the Clay family.

His name was inspired by a white-armored Red vs. Blue Halo character.

Noble’s favorite toys are silvervine sticks, her catnip banana, and her ripple rug. Church prefers to chill out on the sidelines and observe from afar. Every now and then, he gets a burst of the zoomies and runs laps around Page’s house.

“Noble is very entitled and knows it,” Page says. “She’s a super cuddle bug and always pretty hyper. I’ve had her since she was a kitten so it’s been cute to watch her grow up even though I’m not sure where we went wrong as parents. She has also been through 5 moves with us though, before we finally got settled so I’m thankful she’s put up with us for this long.”

“Church is the sweetest boy and although isn’t much of a cuddler, he would murder someone for some noogies. He’s 14 pounds so he’s a hefty chonk, but he acts timid and anxious if you approach him too fast. He’s super social though once warmed up to, and would be completely accepting if the world was ending.”

Nugget (left) & Noodle (right)

Noodle and Nugget (J.D.)

J.D., owner and operator of JJN Multimedia, wouldn’t have described himself as a cat person a year ago. But that all changed when he and his family adopted Noodle, a sphynx, from a reputable breeder. Noodle is a beige-colored cat with wrinkles that look like noodles — which influenced her namesake. A couple months after adopting Noodle, the Belchers adopted Nugget, a gray sphynx with a black snout. Though he’s only had them for a couple months, J.D. says he would “fight bears” for his felines.

“They love bottle caps and snuggling with each other,” J.D. says. “Anything that moves rapidly and makes crinkle sounds is a plus. Their favorite treat is their food – raw, bloody, ground up turkey. I love that they love us and are always up for a good snuggle. They haven’t done anything wrong, ever.”

Bear (left) & Denver (right)

Denver and Bear (Lindsay)

Nicknames: The Boys, Denny Boy (Denver) Boobear (Bear)

Denver and Bear are a dynamic duo. Our content director Lindsay adopted Denver, 5, as a puppy from a rescue in Fairmont, West Virginia in April 2017 after seeing a photo of him on social media. Three years later, Lindsay and her husband Chance spotted Bear, who bears a striking resemblance to a bear cub, in the parking lot of the New River Gorge National Park Canyon Rim Visitors Center. After searching for his previous owners with no results, Bear became part of Lindsay’s family.

Bear is “obsessed” with balls, especially tennis balls or squeaky balls, and Denver prefers stuffed toys he can tear apart. He also loves chewing on bones.

“Denver and Bear are pretty much polar opposites when it comes to their personalities,” Lindsay says. “Denver had a rough puppyhood. He has anxiety and doesn’t warm up to strangers easily, so meeting new people is hard for him (but it makes him a great guard dog!). Whenever I’m able to slowly introduce him to someone new that he learns he can trust is always a special moment. He’s my sidekick and is so loving with the people he trusts.”

“Bear has the sweetest personality and is always looking for love. He’s like the opposite of a guard dog – pretty sure if someone tried to break into our house he’d roll over and beg for scritches.”

Animals make the world a better place, which is why we think it’s important to support them wherever we can. Last year, the JJN team established the Sadie Dog Memorial Fund in honor of J.D.’s beloved dog, Sadie. Over the holiday season, the fund sponsored $800 in food and seven adoptions at the New River Humane Society in Fayetteville, West Virginia.

There are a lot of wonderful rescue organizations and shelters who work around the clock to care for unhoused pets in West Virginia. But they can’t do it alone. It takes time and resources to support their much-needed work. If you’re able, consider adopting from a local shelter or rescue, donating supplies, or volunteering your time!
